Do you want to hear?

Many years ago, my sister Carol sent me this picture saying, “This picture looks just like you did when you were a young girl.  I especially like that she is listening to the seashell.  It reminds me of you listening to GOD.”

Her take of me blew me away for it humbled and challenged me. Wanting to live up to her assessment of me, I keep that picture on my dresser to remind me to always stop and listen to GOD.  When I see it, it reminds me of my little sister Carol as well.

It is so easy to just go lay our requests at GOD’s feet and then get busy doing other things.  GOD wants more.  HE wants me to not just acknowledge HIM in everything but also to listen/ be alert waiting to hear HIS take on the issue.  That way I can do what HE leads me/ impresses on me to do (Philippians 2:13).

There are so many things we don’t know, but GOD knows all things.  Isaiah 28 speaks of GOD as teaching the farmer.  Isaiah 28:26 the farmer knows what to do, for GOD has made him see and understand what he should do…Isaiah 28:28 speaks of how different things need to be handled in different ways and Isaiah 28:29 sums it up with “The LORD of Hosts is a wonderful teacher and gives wisdom.”

Do you have a problem and are you not sure what to do?  Ask of GOD, who gives to all generously, without scolding or bringing up the past, and it shall be given to you. But be sure you ask expecting GOD to answer and willing to do as HE says otherwise, you’ll be greatly disappointed. James 1:5-6

It is GOD who is nudging me by putting that knowledge that I should do something in me (Philippians 2:13). I have learned that if I don’t do what I know I should do, GOD will not give me anymore direction until I do what HE has already shown me to do.

But why wait for a problem?  GOD instructs us ALWAYS/ or in ALL our ways to (Proverbs 3:5-7), “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and don’t lean on your own understanding.  In ALL your ways acknowledge (talk to HIM) and HE will direct your path.  Don’t be wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and depart from evil.”

Sometimes we think we know best, and we rush ahead with our own ideas.  But like these little guys, we can sure mess up things with our limited knowledge.  How much better to go to GOD the only One who has all the facts for directions.

After a major surgery in the early 80s, I lost a lot of blood.  It was the 1st of two surgeries they had to quickly return me to the OR to stop the bleeding. Though terribly weak and out of it, my doctor wouldn’t give me a blood transfusion but stayed by my side overnight.  At 1st it didn’t make sense to my family, but little did they know.

At that time safeguards had not been put in place and there was a rash of incidences from tainted blood.  It was discovered that people with Aids had been donating blood and people getting that blood were getting Aids. Praise the LORD for my doctor’s wisdom, and that safeguards are now in place!

With the great loss of blood, I was extremely weak and having a hard time regaining my strength just to function.  The doctor told me to start walking.  That didn’t make much sense to me, but it surely couldn’t hurt, I slowly began walking.  Each day I would walk a little further and would go at a little faster pace.  It got me outside and the fresh air was good.

Living out in the country, I walked down a dirt road lined with weeds and wildflowers.  From time to time, I would stop and pick a wildflower or a weed that caught my attention.  Then, as I continued on my walk, I’d closely examine it.  No matter if it was big or small, the intricate tiny details of each design and the mixture of colors always amazed me. GOD sure knew what HE was doing!

Apparently so did the doc, for I slowly regained my strength.

Since I like to read in the Bible until something speaks to me, I read 15 long chapters of detail, after detail, after detail (from how the tabernacle was made to specifics on different kinds of sacrifices), those details didn’t seem to apply to me at all. So, I asked the Lord, “What am I to learn here?” (Exodus 35:4-Numbers 10:20 2).

The word DETAIL came to mind, as did the word commanded (which is repeated 48 times throughout those chapters). GOD was definitely interested in the DETAILS. HE had given clear cut directions in how to do each project. It was just as HE took precise care, down to the smallest DETAIL of each of the vast array of brilliantly colored wildflowers HE had made, and the astounding capabilities (that scientists are not able to reproduce) that HE built into the minute mosquito.

Therefore, it is easy to detect, GOD is always concerned with the DETAILS.

In those chapters, GOD had commanded things to be done in a specific way and HE made sure it was recorded, that the ones doing the work, did everything just as HE commanded. That is, until we get to that last chapter.  In that chapter, two men chose to one up GOD (to do something more than GOD had said to do).  And GOD was thrilled, right? NO!

Nadab and Abisha were like Cain.  Although Cain had the example/ the pattern, of how GOD wanted things done, he thought his idea was better, so did things his own way (Genesis 3:21, 4:3-7). GOD did not accept Nadab and Abisha’s sacrifice, just as he had not accepted Cain’s.  The fact is, their action was so offensive to GOD, HE immediately killed them.

Extreme?  It might seem so on the surface, but throughout scripture we find that when GOD is beginning a new work, HE sets standards and consequences so that the ones following after will know the right way to do things (Acts 5:1-11).

But how does this apply to you and me?

JESUS was perfect and never sinned, and we are told to fix our eyes on JESUS the Author (leader- HE leads us in the way we should go), and Perfecter (the ONE making us perfect or complete) of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2-3, 7:25).

JESUS was, and is, very GOD; the ONE who threw the stars into space, that ONE who said “Let there be light and there was light” (Genesis 1:3).  JESUS is the brightness of GOD’s glory, the express image of HIS person and HE upholds all things in the universes by the word of HIS power (Hebrews 1:2,3).  By seeing HIM, we see FATHER GOD (John 14:9-10).  Yet, while on earth, in HIS human body, JESUS our all-powerful, all wise Creator, said not one thing HE had not first heard GOD the FATHER say; nor did JESUS do anything that HE had not seen the FATHER do (John 5:30, 6:38, 8:16, 14:10).

That is what HE asks of us (Romans 12:1).  Huh? I have to check out everything? That is a bitter pill.  It goes against our culture, against the way we think here in the USA. Our motto seems to be, “I will do it my way!”

Yet, are we greater than our Master? (Matthew 10:24,25a, Luke 6:40).

What about you? What about me?  Do we go to GOD with our own ideas, expecting for GOD to act, calling it faith?  The word says, “Faith comes by hearing a hearing by the word (rhema- that inner word spoken in our hearts) of GOD” (Romans 10:17).  We actually need to hear what GOD says on the subject before we can have faith.

Isaiah 45:11 “Thus says the LORD…ask of me concerning…and (then) you can command the work of MY hands.”

The LORD GOD ALMIGHTY says, “I know the plans I have for you (Jeremiah 29:11), those plans go down to the DETAILS.  Step by step HE will lead us.  “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, in ALL your ways acknowledge HIM and HE will direct your path. Be not wise in your own eyes…” (Proverbs 3:5-7a).

Looking unto JESUS, the Author and Perfecter of my faith.

Blindman sat by the road

Camp Elim has been on my mind, probably because I get to go there in a couple of weeksl

Years past I worked up there and at grade school camps at Camp Elim we would sing a lot of fun songs that told of bible stories.  One began, “Blindman sat by the road and he cried.”

Today as I read another blindman’s story in Mark 10:46-52.  Stopping, I sang that old song I learned at camp.  But continuing to read, I also pondered the clear doctrine that it teaches.

In Mark 10:46, the name of the Blindman is given, Bartimaeus.  Which shows that ALMIGHTY GOD knows us by name and relates to us individually.

Bartimaeus must have heard about JESUS to call HIM the Son of David and know that JESUS had power to heal.  The blindman had to believe the word he’d been told that JESUS was walking his way with many people following HIM.  For when the blindman  heard the noise of the crowd getting closer the blindman cried out, “JESUS, Son of David, have mercy on me” (Mark 10:47).

To the Jews that title-Son of David belonged only of ONE, the promised coming Messiah.

Although JESUS knew, JESUS asked Bartimaeus, “What do you want ME to do for you?”  That gave the blindman an opportunity to ask.

The blindman said, “That I may see.” JESUS said to him, “Your faith has made you well.” (Mark 10:52 NKJV).

How did the blindman get faith and how did it work for him?

1st the blindman heard the word of CHRIST (Romans 10:17). Faith can only come if you hear.

2nd if you believe what you hear and receive the truth you obtain faith (2 Peter 1:1).

3rd to have faith you must 1) believe GOD is and 2) believe that HE rewards those who diligently seek HIM (Hebrews 11:6).  The blindman had kept crying out to JESUS until JESUS came to him.

4th true faith produces action (Galatians 5:6).  The blindman didn’t just sit there feeling sorry for himself, he cried out to the one who could help.

5th GOD says “ask and you will receive” (the blindman had to ask in order to be healed) (Matthew 7:8).

All who call on the name (of the LORD JESUS CHRIST) shall be saved (Romans 10:13).

The blindman called on the name of the LORD.  Have you?

Just asking,

Do you pay attention?

We don’t hear much about Joseph- the one GOD picked to be JESUS’s stepfather. This morning I read a short email mentioning him and it triggered my thoughts.

The Bible tells us that Joseph, who was engaged to Mary, was a just man. When he learned she was pregnant he had the power to have her stoned to death.  But he wanted to protect her but not marry her since it was not his child.  As he thought on these things an angel appeared to him and gave him a message from GOD.  Joseph listened carefully, believed and obeyed that word (Matthew 1:19-20, 24).

Joseph shows the truth that initially when we hear a word from GOD, even though a messenger, we recognize it as truth. If we receive it and believe it leads us.  But if we turn from it, we will lose the knowledge it offers.

If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.  And HE said to them, Take heed to (be careful)  what you hear: with what measure you mete (listen), it shall be measured to you: and to you that hear shall more be given.  For he that has (believed), to him shall be given: and he that has not (believed), from him shall be taken even that which he has (heard) (Mark 4:23-25).

If any man will do HIS will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of GOD, or whether I speak of myself (John 7:17).

Because Joseph carefully listened and obeyed the 1st message, we are told of two other times GOD sent him messages that Joseph followed carefully (Matthew 2:13-14 and 19-23).

Initially, that is to begin with, you will know if what is said is of GOD.  If you pay attention and obey it you will gain direction and be told more that is the promise of GOD.

On the other hand, there is the WARNING- If you turn from truth, because you don’t like it or don’t want to think about it then you will not only lose that direction, but you have chosen to walk in the dark.

What makes the difference?

WHY does not everyone who has heard the truth have faith?

Since FAITH comes from HEARING (Greek word means: to hear, listen to, pay attention, heed) and hearing comes through the WORD (rhema-spoken word) of CHRIST (Romans 10:17), WHY does not everyone who has heard the truth have faith?

We know they have heard for:
GOD the FATHER shows/ manifests the truth of HIS existence and HIS eternal power, wisdom and so much more about HIMSELF to everyone (Romans 1:19-20) so they are without excuse (Romans 1:20).

JESUS brings light (truth) to everyone who comes into the world (John 1:9).

When believers in JESUS are yielded to the HOLY SPIRIT and tell others about JESUS, the HOLY SPIRIT gives power to their message spoken (Acts 1:8) by clearly explaining the truth of GOD in the heart of man (1 Corinthians 2:10-12) and convicting those who hear (John 16:8).

2 Thessalonians 2:10 relates that some REFUSE to RECEIVE the love of the truth.

Romans 1:18 tells us men PUSH AWAY, SUPPRESS the knowledge of the truth they hear.

Zechariah 7:11-12 says when the Word of the LORD came men REFUSED to LISTEN, PULLED AWAY they TURNED FROM the truth and even STOPPED their EARS (like putting in ear plugs), that they should not hear and have MADE their hearts HARD as STONE.

John 3:19-20 relates men won’t come close (listen) and grab on to the truth because they don’t like what it says.

Every one of the things men did to avoid the truth shows that initially they understand what is being said, just like the Bible says in Romans 1:18-22.

I submit that faith is offered when the Word of CHRIST goes out and the HOLY SPIRIT shows its truth to the inner man. But faith must be RECEIVED, it is not shoved down the throats of men.

The scenario goes, I hear the truth and say YES! and I have RECEIVED faith.  Initially I did it to Receive CHRIST as my Savior, now I do it when I see more truth from the Word of GOD.  But I can say ‘NO!’ and turn away from the truth and the insight I had initially will go away (Mark 4:23-25, Luke 8:18).

JESUS said: “Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and he will understand! And be sure to pay attention to what you hear. The more you do this, the more you will understand, and even more, besides. To those who are open to MY teaching, more understanding will be given. But to those who are not listening, even what they (initially) have (understood) will be taken away” (Mark 4:23-25 NLT).

I urge you in CHRIST’s stead to consider these things and may the good LORD give you wisdom and understanding (James 1:5, 1 Corinthians 2:10). Then talk over your thoughts with HIM (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Remember you will either believe the truth or believe a lie…Note: take off the 1st 2 letters and the last to letters of the word believe and what do you have?   ( Lie) So don’t add or subtract from the Word of GOD.

Do you want to hear?

Well, it has begun- 2020 and the beginning of the rest of our lives. A brand new start. We who know JESUS have not entered it alone, for GOD is with us. GOD says that not only will HE never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5) but that HE has preset the exact times and places for us according to HIS own purposes in our lives (Acts 17:26-27) and the interaction HE has designed for us with others. HE is never caught unaware, nor is HE ever lacking of resources to do just what HE has promised or wants done.

I’m amazed at our Heavenly FATHER- ALMIGHTY GOD’s amusing humor as I catch glimpses of it in HIS Creation. Looking at some of HIS comical creatures, I can’t help but smile right along with HIM.

Sometimes HE gets me laughing as I see HIS sense of humor in HIS dealings with me. Yesterday morning, when I met with HIM to begin the New Year, was such a time. I was reflecting with an acute awareness of my personal lack of physical hearing and how that played out in conversations? Can you guess what HE spoke to me about as we entered the new year? I will give you another hint… HE set me up.

Turning in my Bible to begin reading it anew, my eyes caught on these words: “Go to this people and say, “hearing you shall hear and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and not perceive; for the heart of this people is waxed gross (literally become calloused) and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes they have closed; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.” Acts 28:26,27

Let’s look at each key phrase a little more closely.

A calloused heart: Calluses are formed by repeated irritation. How does a heart become calloused? It happens when we allow ourselves to get irritated by GOD’s word rather than embracing the truth and applying it to our lives. As we choose irritation instead of yielding to the truth over and over and over again- our hearts become calloused and no longer does the truth prick us.

Absolutely no one is born calloused. It is a result of repeated and definite choices to refuse to listen to the still small voice of GOD. And if you have ever tried to get rid of built up calluses on your feet you know it takes work. The more developed the callous, the longer it takes to remove. And that is why if you have turned away from GOD’s voice over and over and over again… you will not become sensitive to hear HIS voice at the first try.

Dull of hearing- the word dull speaks to me of knives that cannot cut hence cannot do what they were made to do. But knives can be sharpened, but it takes friction. So those dull of hearing can become quick to hear but it takes a choice to listen to the smallest whisper they know is of GOD.

“If anyone really wants to hear, listen carefully. And consider (or ponder, think about) what you hear. For how you pay attention to what you hear will determine how much you are given to hear.”

If you are told a truth but ignore or put off doing what you know you should with that truth, JESUS clearly says that Satan will come and steal that truth away with his lies. Mark 4:23-26, Luke 8:18

You see we have 2 choices when it comes to hearing. 1) We choose who we listen to (initially before we choose- we know if something is of GOD, but if we turn from the light of that truth we then are facing darkness and are easily deluded by our enemy). 2) We choose how we listen. If we acknowledge that what we hear is of GOD but do nothing with that word/neglect it then we will lose it and its potential.

But if we choose to listen to that tiny whisper of GOD -that seed of truth and water that seed by thinking about it, asking GOD questions about it, writing it down or acting on it- that seed will sprout and grow and bring understanding. Maybe not that moment, but give it time and understanding will come.

The meaning of that Greek word translated understand here means join together. When we begin to understand it is like pieces of a puzzle beginning to fit together.

Interestingly to want to hear is the key.

To get rid of the calloused heart and to sharpen the dullness of hearing we must choose to listen carefully and to consider/ ponder that which we hear.

In direct proportion to the time and effort we expend on this will determines the amount of understanding we will be given.

Yes, it is true that there are secret things that are not given to us to understand but GOD declares that HE will reveal- He will gives us eyes to see, and ears to hear and a heart to perceive everything needed for us to be able to do that which HE has appointed for us to do. Deuteronomy 29:4,29

As the NLT says, “if you want to hear, listen and you will understand what the SPIRIT is saying. The choice is yours!

Do you want to hear?
