The Blessed Hope

Through the decades of my life some words have changed in meaning.  When I was a child, the word COOL was the opposite of HOT, and it was a indicator or gage of temperature. I’ve seen those opposing words change to mean the same thing, and not as a meter of temperature at all. In the same way people from different backgrounds may understand the same word to mean different things.  That can and does lead to misunderstandings!

That precept is often found in the way the world defines a word versus what GOD means by that word.  For instance, the dictionary defines HOPE as expectation of something desired.  But in the world HOPE in the world is an if-ish thing, subject or conditional on other factors.  It will only happen if the conditions are met.

Not so in the Bible.  HOPE when used in the Bible concerning the truths of GOD is a happy anticipation and confident expectation that what GOD says will happen.  When the Bible speaks of hope for a Christian it is an established fact that just is not seen or experienced yet (Romans 8:24-25).

As believers in JESUS the Bible declares we have several HOPEs that are based on GOD’s word/ HIS promises.  Some examples are the hope of eternal life (Titus 1:2) and the hope and resurrection of the dead (Acts 23:6), Since GOD is the TRUTH and cannot lie, they are established facts.  For what GOD says, HE will do (Numbers 14:35).

“GOD is not a man, that HE should lie; neither the son of man, that HE should repent: has HE said, and shall HE not do it? or has HE spoken, and shall HE not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19).

The LORD GOD ALMIGHTY said, “…yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it” (Isaiah 46:11).

“In HOPE of eternal life, which GOD, that cannot lie, promised before the world began (Titus 1:2).

The promises, the WORDs of GOD, are sure and will happen just as HE said.

Yesterday, I shared how I came to understand more about the HOPE of GLORY/ the decreed fact that every one who calls on the name of JESUS to be saved will be transformed (it’s a process- 2 Corinthians 3:18) in character so that we share/ participate in the divine nature (not godhood) Romans 8:29, 2 Peter 1:4.  The HOPE of GLORY  is the truth that the glorious divine nature of CHRIST/ HIS amazing character will be developed in us (Colossians 1:27).

Instead of hate we will love, instead of strife we will have inner peace and be gentle even to those who oppose us (2 Timothy 2:24).

Today I’d like to share briefly of another HOPE, the BLESSED HOPE.

“Looking for that blessed HOPE, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

There are 2 days that are often confused.  There is the “day of JESUS CHRIST” and the “day of the LORD.”

the day of JESUS CHRIST” marks a glad conclusion of waiting.

“Being confident of this very thing, that HE (GOD) which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of JESUS CHRIST” (Philippians 1:6).

“…waiting for the coming of our LORD JESUS CHRIST: Who shall also confirm you (Hebrews 7:25) unto the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our LORD JESUS CHRIST” (1 Corinthians 1:7-8).

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious APPEARING of the great GOD and our Savior JESUS CHRIST” (Titus 2:13).

On the day of JESUS CHRIST HE APPEARS to and for believers. HE comes with the clouds (as HE left Jerusalem – Acts 1:9-11) and meets believers not on earth but in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Then where do we go? “In my FATHER’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also (John 14:2-3).

“Now (at this present time) then we (believers in JESUS) are ambassadors for CHRIST, as though GOD did beseech you (unbelievers) by us: we pray you in CHRIST’s stead, be reconciled to GOD. (2 Corinthians 5:20).

As nation will call home its ambassadors before they attack in a war.  In the same manner JESUS calls believers home (the day of JESUS CHRIST / the Rapture or catching away) to heaven before sending HIS wrath on Israel (7 years of Jacob’s Trouble) and those who refused the truth and loved wickedness (the great Tribulation).

Why?  “For GOD hath not appointed us (who received JESUS by believing HE died for our sin) to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our LORD JESUS CHRIST” (1 Thessalonians 5:9).

Whereas throughout both the old and new testaments “the day of the LORD” is marked with sorrow and judgment.

“Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty…Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and HE shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it” (Isaiah 13:6, 9).

“For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the LORD so cometh as a thief in the night.  For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape” (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3).

If you belong to JESUS, you will be caught up to the clouds to meet the LORD in the air prior to the great Tribulation (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).  If you refuse to receive the love of the truth that JESUS died to cleanse you from your sins, you will suffer the wrath of GOD (2 Thessalonians 2:10).

“He that believes on the SON has everlasting life: and he that believes not the SON shall not see life; but the wrath of GOD abides (stays) on him” (John 3:36).

Wherefore HE (JESUS) is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto GOD by him, seeing HE ever lives to make intercession for them (Hebrews 7:25).

I am so glad I belong to JESUS and will escape the wrath of GOD on all who have refused the forgiveness bought with the blood of JESUS on the cross.

Do you belong to JESUS?

The hope of glory

I believe the Word of GOD, but I don’t always understand what certain phrases mean.  Yesterday, as I was awaiting friends to arrive, I picked up my Bible and read in Colossians. All of a sudden one such phrase that baffled me became crystal clear.  It is always exciting when that happens and I get another piece of the puzzle.

As our LORD JESUS began HIS ministry HE stood and read aloud from the scroll of Isaiah.

“The SPIRIT of the LORD GOD is upon ME; because the LORD hath anointed ME to preach good tidings unto the meek; HE has sent ME to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; ……..to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called TREES of RIGHTEOUSNESS, the planting of the LORD, that HE (GOD the FATHER) might be glorified” (Isaiah 61:1,3).

Then JESUS said, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears” (Luke 4:21)

By faith (believing John 3:16) in JESUS the RIGHTEOUSNESS of GOD comes on us (Romans 3:21-22) and we have become GOD’s trees of RIGHTEOUSNESS and GOD had determined to develop us until our character is like that of JESUS CHRIST (Romans 8:29), the RIGHTEOUS ONE/ JESUS (Romans 5:8) whose blood cleanses all who believe in HIM and thereby come to GOD by HIM (JESUS Hebrews 7:25).

If you believe in JESUS you are the LORD’s workmanship created in CHRIST JESUS to do specific things that HE planned in advance for you to do (Ephesians 2:10).  The LORD GOD has planted each of us right where HE wants us (Acts 17:26-27) just as we might dig a hole and plant a tree in our yard. In HIS infinite wisdom, knowledge and power GOD ALMIGHTY has synchronized all things according to the counsel of HIS own will (Ephesians 1:11).

Like any plant we start out as saplings and grow little by little (2 Corinthians 3:18).  In the same manner that the pounding and thrashing of wind and rain storms makes a tree trunk stronger so, the problems that come against us GOD uses (Romans 8:28) to achieve for us.  Through the troubles we are developed and grow stronger and stronger in the LORD, plus, as a bonus they earn us eternal rewards (2 Corinthians 4:15-18).

I’m amazed when I look back to how I reacted to the problems that hit me years ago, and then look at how troubles affect me today.  If you are like me, you will see a drastic difference, for each struggle we face develops us and prepares us for what lies ahead (James 1:2-4).

GOD promises to direct us if we ask (Proverbs 3:5-7) that is if we are willing to do what HE says even if we don’t understand (James 1:5-7, John 7:17).  HE promises to equip us for whatever HE asks us to do (Colossians 1:12) and always stay by our side to help us (Hebrews 13:5-6).  And GOD also declares that as we use these and other PRECIOUS PROMISES from HIS word that we will slowly become more and more like JESUS.  We will take on the divine nature such as love, joy, peace, longsuffering (ability to put up with things), goodness, kindness, gentleness, faith and faithfulness, meekness (knowing that GOD alone is the source of our strength and everything we have) as well as self control.

We do NOT become GOD but as we grow in our KNOWLEDGE of GOD the FATHER and JESUS CHRIST (2 Peter 1:1-4, 2 Corinthians 3:18) we grow more and more in CHRIST’s likeness (HIS image/ glorious nature).

CHRIST Who is in the image of the invisible GOD (Colossians 1:15) is being FORMED in us (Galatians 4:19) just as GOD our FATHER promises (Romans 8:29).  That is what it means in Colossians 1:27 when GOD makes known the riches of the glory of the mystery among the Gentiles which is CHRIST in you the hope of glory.”

Wow! To participate in the divine nature… it blows my mind!

It all begins be just believing/ receiving the truth (John 3:16, 36, Romans 10:9-10) and calling on the name of the LORD (Romans 10:13).  From there just looking to HIM (pray and read the Word of GOD and get together with believers in JESUS) and doing what you know you should do.

“For it is GOD which works (places) in you both to will (want what HE wants) and to (be able to) do of HIS good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).

“For whom HE (GOD) did foreknow (know would believe in JESUS), HE (GOD) also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of HIS SON (JESUS), that HE (JESUS) might be the firstborn among many brethren” (Romans 8:29).

What do you tell yourself every morning as you start your day?

The LORD Is your life! Press on, stay strong! Keep believing GOD has great things ahead for you! Love the LORD your GOD with all your heart, listen to and obey HIS still small voice that nudges you to act (Philippians 2:13), and hold fast to Him. For the LORD is your life. (Deuteronomy 30:20).

JESUS is coming back for those who believe in HIM to take them to where HE is that we may always be with the LORD (John 14:3).

Something beautiful

For with GOD nothing shall be impossible Luke 1:37

The minute details of GOD’s manifold creation of flowers never ceases to dazzle me.

I decided to take a closer look at the lilac-colored bushes I’ve admired bordering a neighbor’s yard and around the elementary school and it’s parking lot.  They have multiple branches 3 to 5 feet tall and each large branch has numerous smaller ones.  As I drew closer, I noticed bees everywhere gathering nectar from tiny flowers on each branch.  Carefully I selected a tiny piece of the plant where there was no bee.  (It’s in the picture attached).

As I began to examine the teensy details of the multiple delicate flowers the word BEAUTIFUL shouted at me. A Gaither song flooded my thoughts, and I began to sing some of the chorus perhaps mixing up some words.  And as I sang, I realized I needed to sing it as a prayer to our Almighty Creator for several individuals I know who are struggling.  Bringing one after another before the throne, I continued on my walk singing: Something beautiful, something good, all our confusion YOU understood, All we have to offer YOU is brokenness and strife and YOU’ll make something beautiful of our lives.”

Nothing is too difficult for our LORD and HE promises that every single one who comes to HIM through our LORD JESUS CHRIST (Hebrews 7:25) HE (GOD the Father) will transform into the image of JESUS CHRIST (Romans 8:29- that is the divine nature 2 Peter 1:4—not making us gods but developing CHRIST’s character in us HIS children).

And like the flowers HE created with colors, sizes, and designs vastly different GOD somehow is transforming us into the likeness of JESUS but in different colors and sizes and features.  What an amazing GOD we serve.

What you see

1 Corinthians 4:5  “Therefore judge nothing before the time…”

Yesterday I read an account–For five successive years grasshoppers descended on a farming area, destroying all crops. Feeling desperate, and near starvation, many turned to GOD and prayed.  After they prayed, the weather warmed up and the eggs started to come to life.  The very thing they feared had happened once again.  Hadn’t they prayed?  Why didn’t GOD answer their prayers?

Then four days later the temperature dropped to freezing which killed the larvae and saved the crops.  Wow! HIS ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).

That story reminding me of 1993 when as part of the 10/40 window incentive to pray on site with insight for the most gospel resistant area of the world, a group of us flew to Albania.  We went to pray blessings and awakening for this country.  It had been placed under harsh communist rule after World War 2 and for 50 years had been in isolation from the rest of the world.

You see when Hoffa was given power all the borders were closed off and none were allowed in or out of the country.  The communists gathered all the Christians and placed them alive in oil barrels and rolled them out into the sea.  All Albanians lost their homes and lands and were forcibly moved to the cities placed in concrete block apartments buildings.  They were not allowed to make any decisions for themselves.

So, when we arrived soon after Albania was liberated, the missionaries told us (and we saw evidence of) that the people of the present generation had no sense of ownership (for they never had owned anything) nor could they make decisions because they had not ever been given choices.

We spent days walking the streets and praying, we went to a hospital and prayed and climbed to high places and prayed blessings over Albania and its people.  Then we went home.  It wasn’t long before the news blared that Albania was in absolute anarchy and even children had rifles.  We were horrified and prayed for them, but for some of us really struggled.

Hadn’t we prayed?  Why hadn’t GOD heard?

Then finally things calmed down in Albania and the missionaries were allowed back into Albania and reports filtered back home to us.  The Albanians in the church, now were making the decisions and the missionaries found themselves there only in an advisory role.

GOD had used all the bad to answer our prayers for the good of the Albanian people for through it HE taught the people how to think for themselves and how to listen to HIM.  HE use it to grow up the Albanians fast.

Have you prayed then the opposite seems to happen?  Wait I say on the LORD for HE is at work achieving for you (2 Corinthians 4:15-18).

Be prepared for mud

Have you ever prayed and prayed then everything seem to get worse?

It seems as if it has been especially hot this year so we find ourselves asking GOD for rain.  Therefore, I smiled when I got an email with the words, “If you are going to pray for rain, be prepared for mud!”

But as I went on with my day that statement came to mind and the LORD whispered to me, “Sharon, you asked me to work in ‘those lives’, so expect and be prepared for some mud.  It is par for the course but look at it this way-the mud is evidence that I am at work answering your prayer.”

“…For our light (by comparison) affliction (problems), which is but for a moment (and will pass), works (achieves/ produces) for us a something that far exceeds the pain of today and will last eternally” 2 Corinthians 4:16-17.

“For the moment, all discipline seems not to be pleasant, but painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness” Hebrews 12:11.

Those words lifted my spirit for it reminded me the mud I was seeing was just revealing that GOD is at work answering my prayers.

Pulling weeds

Pull out the weeds.

Having taken a break for a few months from teaching 3 classes, I’ve had a chance to take a breath, leisurely look around as I go about my day.  Outside of hurriedly watering, feeding, and enjoying the abundance of roses in my yard I never really paid much attention.  Its been so hot I’ve stayed inside a lot.

After a walk I noticed an abundance of weeds taking over and crowding my rose bushes.  So, this morning I put on some decorative gardening gloves and got on my knees to begin pulling.  It wasn’t long before I realized I needed a tool to break up the ground for the roots of the weeds go way down and are extremely strong.  It’s going to take a while before I get the weeding done.

“Looking diligently lest any man fail (to use) of the grace of GOD (available to him Hebrews 4:16); lest any ROOT of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled” (Hebrews 12:15).

As I began weeding, I thought of how when sin is left alone how it takes root in a life and the longer it is left the stronger it becomes.  So, I’m asking the LORD to show me what is needed to be uprooted in my life.

LORD, I thank YOU for YOUR longsuffering and gentleness with me.  YOU tell me to be holy as YOU are holy and although I am not conscious of anything not confessed to YOU, YOU know all things.  YOU know things about me that I’ve hidden even from myself.  Please show me what I need to turn from and hand to YOU I ask in JESUS name.

By faith we understand

Why do some seem to understand more of the Bible than others?

BY FAITH WE UNDERSTAND that the worlds were framed by the Word of GOD, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible” (Hebrews 11:3).

UNDERSTANDING TRUTH comes through FAITH.  So, how do we get FAITH?

“So, then FAITH COMES BY HEARING, and hearing by the WORD of GOD” (Romans 10:17).

How can reading or hearing the BIBLE/ WORD of GOD produce FAITH?

“For the WORD of GOD is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).

When something strikes you in the WORD of GOD the HOLY SPIRIT is explaining what GOD means (1 Corinthians 2:10) and if you receive that WORD of GOD as TRUTH, FAITH is produced.  And by FAITH we UNDERSTAND those things of GOD.

But if you suppress the TRUTH that strikes you and refuse to receive the love of that TRUTH, you will lose all insight in that area (see Luke 8:18, Romans 1:18, 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11).

“But HE (JESUS) answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every WORD that proceeds from the mouth of GOD” (Matthew 4:4).

“Receive, please, instruction from HIS (GOD’s) mouth, and lay up HIS WORDS in your heart” Job 22;22.

Camping and GOD

A dear friend told me she and hubby were heading out for a week in the mountains with her daughter and family and for a moment I envied her.  It’s been so long since I’ve been to my favorite place (anywhere in the mountains with pine trees) let alone go camping.

But then I remembered how due to her husband’s nearly non-existent immune system, they were stuck home alone, couldn’t even go for groceries or have her kids over for months on end during the pandemic. So instead of pouting I began rejoicing as I saw the lovingkindness and justice of our eternal GOD.

The prefix omni is often placed before the attributes of GOD because it means all and unlimited. Being GOD is the source of all things that adjective belongs uniquely to HIM.

Now every thing true about GOD, all of HIS divine nature, compliments each of the other things true about GOD.

GOD is amazing and there is so much that can be said and so much more that we do not have a clue about our Creator-the source of all things.  Today, my heart is especially standing in AWE at the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY’s power and knowledge as it ties in with HIS justice and lovingkindness.

In religious circles GOD’s power and knowledge are called omnipotence and omniscience.  They are a mighty combination and speak of the unlimited power of GOD over all and HIS unlimited knowledge of past, present and future events. Combine that with HIS unlimited love and justice you can see all at play in my friend’s week’s trip to the mountains.

In the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY’s unlimited knowledge and power HE has synchronized events to display HIS love for HIS children and the justice of blessing them for their looking to HIM and endurance during the pandemic.

That speaks volumes to me and encourages me right now concerning the multiple crisis situations facing dear ones.  There is an awesome principle written in the word of GOD.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love GOD, to them who are the called (who call on the name of the LORD 1 Corinthians 1:2) according to HIS purpose.  For whom HE did foreknow (would believe in JESUS), HE also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of HIS Son (JESUS), that HE (JESUS) might be the firstborn among many brethren” (Romans 8:28-29).

“For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of GOD.  For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment {in comparison}, works {achieves} for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” {that far surpasses the pain of today} (2 Corinthians 4:15-17).

So, I can rest confident that GOD knows what HE is doing. HE says I will be comforted when I see the reason for all HE has allowed.

“and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem {them}, even concerning all that I have brought upon it. And they {those you love and see in crisis} shall comfort you, when you see their ways and their doings: and you shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done ..says the LORD GOD (Ezekiel 14:22b-23).

Rejoicing in hope and exalting in the ONE who has preset the exact times and places according to HIS purposes which are good! (Acts 17:26-27, Ephesians 1:11).

Getting directions

Ever wonder how you should react to what another says or does? Being instant in prayer (shooting immediate silent prayers up to the LORD Romans 12:12) does help.  But sometimes GOD chooses to prepare us in advance.

Getting with the LORD 1st thing in the morning not only a time of calm peace and joy but it also prepares me for the day.  During my time with GOD, HE will often give me directions although I usually don’t know that they are specific directions for upcoming situations until later.

JESUS said that HE only did and said only what GOD the FATHER told HIM to do and say (John 12:49-50).  HE also said we who believe in HIM are HIS friends and abide in HIS love when we do what HE says /directs/ commands (John 15:10,14).

“Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established” (Proverbs 16:3).  Once you go to the LORD with a situation and trust HIM to lead, your thoughts will be established in other words you will innately know what to do and say.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge HIM, and HE shall direct your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes..” (Proverbs 3:5-7).  Now if you feel you must make sense of it you are leaning on your own understanding/ wise in your own eyes and NOT TRUSTING the LORD.

I just love how the LORD prepares me for my day when I meet with HIM in the morning.  Today several things struck me as I read the Bible and I jotted them down in my journal to help me remember them and where they are found.  Then later when I was checking out some comments on Facebook posts I’d written, twice one of the verses the LORD had impressed me this morning directed my actions.

GOD did NOT give me the 2 Timothy 2:24-25 which would have instructed me to gently teach by pointed out the scripture texts that validated what I said.

“And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if GOD peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth” (2 Timothy 2:24-25).

Instead, the HOLY SPIRIT impressed on me the truth of 1 Timothy 6:20 NLT which instructed me to “AVOID godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge..” So, I didn’t answer the comments, although there are scriptural answers that counter what they said.

GOD knows who are open to listen, and who are not.

I think of an old hymn…

Tis so sweet to trust in JESUS, and to take HIM at HIS Word just to rest upon HIS promise and to know thus says the LORD.

JESUS JESUS How I trust YOU How I’ve proven YOU over and over, JESUS JESUS precious JESUS oh for grace to trust YOU more.

I’m so glad I’ve learned to trust YOU Precious JESUS Savior Friend and I know that YOU are with me will be with me to the end.
