“…there is none good but one, that is, GOD” (Matthew 19:17).
If GOD is good why is there a time of judgment? GOD is good and because HE is good HE cannot tolerate evil for evil destroys. GOD does and finally will bring judgment down on all wrong/ sin.
Where does that leave us for all of us have sinned (Romans 3:23).
in GOD’s goodness HE made a way for sinful people, like you and me. “if we will believe HE sent JESUS and JESUS died for the punishment of sin we will obtain eternal life (John 3:16). If we call upon the name of the LORD JESUS CHRIST we will be saved (Romans 10:13) from the wrath to come.
When we turn to JESUS and are saved we are given the HOLY SPIRIT to lead us and teach us and empower us to do what GOD wants done. HE often uses the Bible to show us what GOD wants for no scripture came by the will of man but as the HOLY SPIRIT moved on their hearts they wrote what GOD placed in their hearts.
Through JESUS life on earth and then when JESUS was nailed to the cross bearing sin HE fulfilled the LAW.
“Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled (Matthew 5:17-18).
Having fulfilled the Law, with HIS blood JESUS established a new covenant (1 Corinthians 11:25) for those who believe in HIM and call on the name of the LORD to be saved (Romans 10:9-10, 13). In this new covenant the HOLY SPIRIT moves in believers to show us what GOD wants and to empower us to do it and our slips into sin are forgiven for JESUS paid for them (Hebrews 10:16-17).
The Law and the Prophets told what GOD wanted. Matthew 7:12 and Matthew 22:27-40 both tell us the Law and Prophets say to love GOD and others with all our hearts, and mind and strength. This is the same thing that GOD wants today.
So, what is the difference between the old and new covenants?
Under the Law man had to keep GOD’s ways perfectly on his own but because of his sin nature (selfishness) he could not do it.
In the New Covenant we have better promises. JESUS has paid for all sin and when we believe in JESUS we are given GOD the HOLY SPIRIT and are born into GOD’s family (John1:12). Then as new born babies the HOLY SPIRIT is teaching us walk like GOD (just as toddlers are taught and encouraged to walk). HE flows through us (John 7:38-39) and pours GOD’s love into our hearts (Romans 5:5)and as we claim the great and precious promises found in HIS word we begin to escape the corruption that is in the world through lust (2 Peter 1:4).
In the New Covenant the HOLY SPIRIT lives in us to explain what GOD wants (1 Corinthians 2:10) and remind us what GOD wants (John 14:26, 16:13) and to enable/ empower us to do what GOD wants (Acts 1:8).
The HOLY SPIRIT also prays for us because we do not know what we really need for we don’t always know specifically what GOD is doing through us (Romans 8:26-27) and JESUS also continues to work on our behalf to save us to the uttermost by interceeding for us (Hebrews 7:25) and HE understands our needs like none other for HE suffered in all ways just like us and JESUS stands ready to give us mercy and grace to help when we ask (Hebrews 4:14-16).
Our part in all this is to believe GOD’s word. So, we must get in the Bible to see what HE says and listen to that still small voice when we know we should do something.
I believe AW Tozer had it right when he said:
“Satan’s greatest weapon (against us) is our ignorance of GOD’s Word.” AW Tozer
